Dog Training Classes

Classes are starting again!

In the light of the rcent government announcements, concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reintroducing small training classes and private training with special measures in place.

We have a waiting list for new classes, and need to complete courses which were started before lock-down. Please be patient at this busy time, and we hope to be able to assist your training as soon as possible.

We apologise for any inconvenience, but we would like to do what we can to reduce the spread of this virus.

Best wishes,
Laura & the team

WED 15 JULY 2020 | DOG CLUB - PICK N' MIX | 4 WEEKS

* Covid-19 Social distancing measures apply! *

* Information will be send out to you upon registration *

Dog Club - Pick n' Mix | hosted by The Wheelhouse Dog Training School & Minds Alike

This 4 week course is for those who are hooked with the training bug, or for those dogs that just won’t ever tire! An ideal follow on from the intermediate or for those dogs who have done plenty of training previously.  This course continues to work on your obedience and handling skills, but also dips into gundog training, pre-agility exercises, tricks and distance work.

Each lesson will start with group work - working on obedience basics around distractions, followed by:

Week 1: Fun obedience - We will work on static and moving obedience exercises including sit, down, stand in a variety of positions, various stay exercises, leave work and recall and heel-work, incorporating distractions.

Week 2: Rally-obedience - Rally is a fun obedience sport and involves you and your dog working as a team to navigate a course with numbered signs indicating different exercises to perform; think of it as a sort of 'obedience exercise obstacle course' including heelwork, turns, static exercises e.g. sit/down/stand, leave, recall, stay, jump, hold and drop.

Week 3: Agility - Have a go at some basic agility, building your dogs confidence with small jumps, tunnels and directional cues.

Week 4: Gun dog - Here we will work on distance control, heel-work, hold and drop, and a variety of retrieve exercises.

You can do this course as many times as you like, or you could have a break and come back to it. The idea is just to let you have some fun and keep the training fresh. Many of these activities will still teach life skills which you can utilise in your everyday life.

Reactive Dog Class | hosted by Minds Alike

Please note: owners must have spoken to Laura before booking onto this class as prior assessment is required. Get in touch at mindsalikeatb@gmail.com

This 6 week course is designed for those dogs who are nervous around other dogs and require distance. This may include dogs who's anxiety manifests in barking, growling or lunging towards other dogs, or dogs who show extreme avoidance. All dogs must have reached a stage in their training where they can cope with 10-15 metre distance from other dogs, and have been working with Laura Ward privately, before joining this class.

Weeks one and two take place in a field location where we work on basic obedience and support/management strategies. You will already have practiced these with Laura individually, so here we are setting up controlled scenarios to practice these strategies around other dogs.

Weeks three and four take place in Hodgemoor Woods, where we will go for a quiet walk at adequate distance from one another, practicing calm social behaviour without the intensity and pressure often assocaited with head on meet and greets. We will also practice and reinforce the management strategies in this setting.

Weeks 5 and 6 - we discuss and decide.
